The Lagos State Government has dismissed widespread rumours suggesting that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has been asked to step down from office, describing the claims as false and misleading.
In an official statement released on Tuesday, the government refuted reports alleging that the governor was under pressure to resign due to health concerns. It stressed that the story was fabricated to create unnecessary tension and misinform the public.
Speaking on the issue, the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, said the report is part of a recurring trend of fake news circulating online. He assured residents that the governor remains in good health and is fully engaged in his official duties.
Akosile emphasised that governance in the state has not been disrupted, noting that Sanwo-Olu continues to function effectively, both mentally and physically, in leading Lagos.
He stated that there has been no request or pressure from any quarters for the governor to resign, urging the public to disregard such claims.
The clarification follows a viral report alleging that the governor might vacate office, with his deputy, Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, set to assume leadership.
Addressing this speculation, Akosile explained that a recent meeting between the governor and his deputy was routine and unrelated to any crisis. According to him, the discussion included political consultations, with Hamzat sharing his intentions regarding the 2027 governorship race.
The state government maintained that the meeting was peaceful and should not be interpreted as a sign of instability or health concerns surrounding the governor.
