The Lagos State Government has paid a total of N3.1 billion in compensation to 331 property owners whose lands and buildings were acquired for major infrastructure projects across the state.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced the development on Monday, stating that the beneficiaries are property owners in Badagry, Epe, Ikorodu, Igbogbo, and Ogba.
According to the governor, the compensation underscores the state’s commitment to ensuring that residents affected by public infrastructure projects are treated fairly and adequately compensated for their losses.
Sanwo-Olu explained that the government recognises the impact compulsory land acquisition can have on families, businesses, and livelihoods, stressing that infrastructure development should not come at the expense of justice.
He noted that every compensation claim underwent a thorough verification process before payment was approved, ensuring transparency and accountability in the exercise.
“As we continue to build the roads and public infrastructure Lagos needs, we must also do right by the people whose lives are directly affected,” the governor said.
He added that while the ongoing infrastructure projects are designed to improve transportation and public services for millions of Lagos residents, the sacrifices made by affected property owners are not taken for granted.
“Behind every property is a family, a home, or a business. These projects will benefit millions of Lagosians, but we remain committed to governing with fairness and accountability,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
Under Nigerian law, governments are required to compensate owners of properties acquired for public purposes.
The Lagos State Government has continued to acquire land for road expansion, urban renewal, and other critical infrastructure projects aimed at improving mobility and enhancing public services across the state.
