The Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) has reportedly recorded a massive influx of new members following the defection of former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, to the party.
The South-West Coordinator of the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement, Adefolaseye Adebayo, disclosed during an interview on Arise TV that approximately 10 million Nigerians registered with the NDC within 24 hours of Obi’s move.
Obi, alongside former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, officially left the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the NDC on Sunday, a development that has sparked widespread political reactions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Some critics have argued that Obi’s decision to switch parties could weaken his presidential prospects. However, Adebayo rejected this view, insisting that Obi’s political strength goes beyond party affiliation and is rooted in his personal credibility, track record, and public perception.
She emphasized that Obi commands significant support across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, noting that his influence remains intact despite the change in political platform.
According to her, the rapid increase in NDC registrations reflects the enduring appeal of Obi’s political movement. She maintained that his supporters are likely to remain loyal regardless of the party he represents.
The defection of Obi and Kwankwaso has further intensified political discourse, with supporters suggesting that their alliance could reshape opposition politics and mobilize voters seeking alternatives to the current political order.
