A devastating explosion at a crowded bar in the upscale Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana has claimed multiple lives and left dozens injured during New Year’s Eve festivities.
The blast tore through Le Constellation bar in the Valais region at approximately 1:30 a.m. local time on Wednesday, triggering a fierce fire that engulfed parts of the popular establishment. More than 100 revelers were inside the venue when the explosion occurred.
The Valais Cantonal Police confirmed “several fatalities and several injured” but have not yet released an exact death toll as emergency operations and victim identification efforts remain ongoing.
A massive emergency response was deployed to the scene, including police units, firefighters, ambulance crews, and air rescue teams. Authorities have cordoned off the entire area surrounding the bar and imposed a temporary no-fly zone over Crans-Montana to facilitate uninterrupted rescue and recovery operations.
Dramatic images and videos shared on social media and reported by Swiss media outlets showed flames consuming sections of the building as emergency vehicles filled the streets of the normally tranquil alpine resort.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and panic as patrons fled the burning establishment in the early hours of New Year’s Day.
The cause of the explosion remains undetermined, according to police. While some local reports have speculated about possible involvement of fireworks or pyrotechnics used during New Year’s celebrations, authorities have not confirmed any theory.
Investigators from the cantonal police and regional prosecutors are working to establish the circumstances that led to the deadly blast. A press briefing is expected later today to provide further updates.
Authorities have established a dedicated helpline for families and friends seeking information about loved ones who may have been affected by the tragedy.
Crans-Montana, situated in southwestern Switzerland, is renowned as one of the country’s most exclusive and prestigious ski destinations, attracting wealthy international tourists throughout the winter season. The resort is scheduled to host a speed skiing World Cup event later this month.
The tragedy has cast a dark shadow over what should have been a joyous celebration, turning New Year’s festivities into a night of horror for the alpine community and visiting tourists.
Further updates are expected as the investigation continues and authorities work to notify families of the victims.
