The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration, and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a warning to Nigerians about illegal baby formula circulating in the market, urging parents to verify product registration before purchase.
NAFDAC’s alert comes amid a global recall of Nestlé infant formula products affecting 60 countries worldwide. While Nigeria is not included in the recall, the agency emphasized that any SMA infant formula sold without approved NAFDAC registration numbers remains illegal in the Nigerian market.
According to the public alert signed by NAFDAC management, only three SMA infant formula products are legally registered for sale in Nigeria: SMA Gold 1 (registration number B1-2783), SMA Gold 2 (registration number B1-2780), and SMA Gold 3 (registration number B1-2781). Any SMA products lacking these registration numbers should be considered illegal.
The global recall announced by Nestlé on January 5 involves specific batches of infant formula due to possible contamination with cereulide, a heat-resistant toxin produced by Bacillus cereus bacteria that can cause nausea and severe vomiting.
NAFDAC has deployed its zonal directors and state coordinators nationwide to conduct surveillance and identify any recalled or illegally sold products. The agency urged consumers to purchase infant formula only from authorized sources and report any unregistered products to the nearest NAFDAC office or through the e-reporting platforms on its website.
Nestlé Nigeria has confirmed that its locally registered infant formula products, including SMA Gold and NAN Optipro ranges, meet all regulatory safety requirements and remain safe for consumption.
