Former presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has praised Afrobeats star Davido for using his appearance at the ongoing FIFA World Cup to spotlight Nigeria’s security challenges.
Davido had drawn attention during the tournament after appearing in a custom black leather jacket bearing the inscription “BRING THEM HOME,” alongside green buttons displaying the names of schoolchildren reportedly abducted in Oyo State.
In a post shared on Facebook on Monday, Obi described the gesture as powerful and commendable, noting that it went beyond entertainment to raise global awareness about insecurity in Nigeria.
He said the action helped direct international focus to the plight of the abducted children as well as broader security concerns in the country.
Obi also reflected on Nigeria’s absence from the World Cup, arguing that it reflects deeper issues in leadership and structural development rather than a lack of talent.
According to him, the country continues to produce outstanding athletes and entertainers, as seen in Nigerian performers at global events and players of Nigerian origin representing other nations.
He stressed the need for deliberate investment in systems that can properly nurture young talent and create opportunities for Nigerians to excel in sports and other sectors.
