High-ranking government officials and prominent business leaders assembled at the Harbour Point Event Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos, on Monday evening for a tribute ceremony honouring the late Segun Awolowo, grandson of renowned statesman Obafemi Awolowo.
The memorial service drew an impressive gathering of dignitaries, including Presidential Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, Lagos Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and his wife Dolapo, former Delta State Governor James Ibori, and former Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Niyi Adebayo. Other attendees included former Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel, Heirs Holdings and UBA Chairman Tony Elumelu, and businesswoman Sade Okoya.
Awolowo passed away on November 20 at the age of 62. Born on September 27, 1963—just two months after his father, Segun Awolowo Sr., died in a car accident at 25—he was the only son of Abah Folawiyo.
A trained lawyer, Awolowo served as executive director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) from 2013 to 2021, where he championed the development of Nigeria’s non-oil export sector. In July 2021, he was elected president of the National Trade Promotion Organizations representing ECOWAS member states.
He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.
