The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has urged the “Take It Back Movement” to suspend its planned nationwide protest scheduled for Monday, April 7, 2025, calling the timing of the demonstration ill-conceived and mischievous.
In a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police expressed concern over the protest, which is set to take place across several states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The date coincides with the Federal Government’s declaration of April 7 as National Police Day, a day meant to celebrate the dedication and resilience of officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force.
While acknowledging the constitutional right of citizens to peaceful assembly and association, the police questioned the rationale for staging a protest on the same day as an official event honoring the police. “The rationale behind staging a nationwide protest on the same day is questionable and perceived to be a deliberate attempt to malign the image of the Nigeria Police,” the statement read.
The Force emphasized that the National Police Day celebration will feature participation from dignitaries, including foreign Inspectors-General of Police and diplomats, and is designed to recognize the achievements of the police in maintaining national security. According to the NPF, holding a protest on the same day could detract from the significance of the event and damage the reputation of the police and the country.
Describing the protest as “ill-timed and mischievous,” the police appealed to the organizers to reconsider their actions and explore more constructive channels. “We encourage the organizers and anyone planning to participate in the protest to pursue dialogue with the appropriate government institutions to address their concerns,” the statement added.
The NPF reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights of citizens while encouraging peaceful engagement and cooperation over actions that could lead to disruption.
