The Police Service Commission (PSC) has issued a stern warning to officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) against engaging in civil cases related to land, rent, and marital disputes. The Chairman of the PSC, retired Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Hasimu Argungu, emphasized that the Commission would no longer tolerate any form of abuse of office by serving officers.
Argungu stated that officers found meddling in such civil matters would face sanctions, including the suspension of their promotions. He reiterated his commitment to leading a transparent and corruption-free administration within the Commission, ensuring that all funds received and spent by the body are fully accounted for.
“I will never spare thieves wherever I am. We are here to assist the government in fighting corruption. I arrive at work before 8:00 a.m. and am the last person to leave the office; that is leadership,” he remarked.
Argungu added, “I have not changed and will never change; I know that leadership is everything. My mandate is not to come here to embezzle money; I must ensure transparency and openness, and I will fight to the last.”
During the meeting, Argungu also assured the visiting delegation that the Commission would collaborate with them to provide local and international training opportunities for staff members.
The delegation, led by Ade Ipaye of the Justice Research Institute, commended Argungu for his commitment to fighting corruption. Ipaye, a former Lagos State Attorney General, praised the PSC Chairman for his dedication to transparency, noting that it is often a rare quality in governance.
The visit was part of an effort to enhance the constitutional mandate of the PSC and improve the operations of the Nigeria Police Force. Ipaye further pledged the support of the Justice Research Institute in training PSC staff to strengthen their oversight role in the Police Force.
The remarks were made during a visit to the PSC headquarters, as disclosed in a statement by the Commission’s spokesperson, Ikechukwu Ani.
