President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has condemned the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in the custody of terrorists in Katsina State, declaring that his administration will not negotiate with criminal groups.
The Katsina State Government confirmed on Saturday that the retired military officer died while being held captive by bandits. Authorities described the incident as a painful loss to his family, the state, and the nation.
According to the government, Abubakar reportedly died from health complications linked to diabetes and hypertension during his captivity.
Reacting through a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed sadness over the development. He noted that the retired general, who had served the nation with distinction, was travelling to his hometown when he was abducted.
The President extended his condolences to the late officer’s family, the Katsina State Government, and the Nigerian Armed Forces. He also sympathised with Abubakar’s wife, who remains in the custody of the kidnappers.
Tinubu maintained that the government would not bow to pressure from terrorists seeking the release of their members detained by security agencies.
The statement stressed that criminal groups would not be allowed to dictate terms to the government, reiterating the administration’s commitment to confronting insecurity across the country.
The President referenced his Democracy Day address, warning bandits, kidnappers, and terror sponsors to surrender or face decisive action from the Nigerian state. He emphasised that opportunities for surrender would not remain open indefinitely and vowed that those responsible for violence against Nigerians would face the full weight of the law.
Tinubu urged citizens to remain united in the fight against insecurity, expressing confidence that the country would eventually overcome terrorism and emerge stronger.
He further described the death of Major General Abubakar as a reminder of the need to maintain a firm stance against terrorists, insisting that they should be treated as enemies of the state rather than partners for negotiation.
