Jonathan Ogbonna, also known as DeJon, is the second of four children. He has an elder brother and sister, and two younger sisters. A graduate of Geology from the University of Ibadan, Jonathan is a devoted Christian, passionate about music, and married to the “most amazing woman in the universe.” Together, they have a daughter.
In an exclusive interview with SHABA GBENGA, Publisher of Omonaijablog.com.ng, DeJon, an alternative singer, discusses his life, career, and the music industry. He also shares his principles and what he refuses to do for fame.
Tell us about your journey into the entertainment industry.
My first encounter with music was as an eight-year-old boy, influenced by my mother, who was about to release an album at that time. In primary 6, I started playing the keyboard for my church and making melodies. During my first year at the University of Ibadan, my friend and roommate, Toba, advised me to write lyrics for my melodies. So, I wrote my first song. Although I didn’t release it, I considered presenting it at the University of Ibadan Freshers’ Welcome Program. I might still release it, unedited, so the world can see my growth.
How did you come up with the name DeJon?
People call me Jon for short, but my mom calls me Dee Jon (which translates to Uncle Jon) when she is pleased with me. I liked the name and decided to write it as DeJon. To my surprise, I found out that DeJon is an actual name meaning ‘God is gracious’, often found among African Americans. I adopted the name because of its meaning.
What has been your experience since you started?
It hasn’t been easy, but it hasn’t been unbearable either. There have been moments of both joy and pain, but through it all, one thing has been consistent—growth. My experiences have shaped me and given me new perspectives on life and the music industry.
What is your genre of music?
I am an alternative singer.
As an alternative singer, who inspired you to do music?
I’ve been inspired by many musicians. The first is my mom, although her songs were never released. My roommate Toba inspired me to write my first song. Other influences include Jon Bellion, John Legend, Rihanna, and Justin Bieber. In Nigeria, I’ve been inspired by Rema, WizKid, Buju, Davido, and Burna Boy.
Who is your greatest inspiration of all time?
Spellz has been a significant influence. Beyond studio sessions, he has inspired me to be a better version of myself and given me a better perspective on success in the music industry. He taught me that the real life of an artist starts after studio sessions and performances.
How do you source inspiration for your songs?
I take walks, sleep and receive melodies in my dreams, drive out in open spaces enjoying nature, eat, take showers, watch movies, or have fun with my wife.
What’s an unforgettable thing you’ve done?
In school, I took the punishment for my younger sister to protect her. I went to the principal, handed in my badge, and offered to take the punishment. The school management was surprised and returned my badge. My sister appreciated and respected me more for it.
Would you ever date a sugar mommy to grow in the industry?
No, please.
Why not?
Apart from being married, I believe that good music and the right support system will attract people. Relying on a sugar mommy would limit my achievements. I prefer to develop my craft to gain success.
What do you consider success in the entertainment industry?
Success is being yourself without sacrificing your personality or values. For me, success is having the freedom to express my music to an audience that connects with me without compromising my persona.
Why do most young artists find it difficult to succeed?
Success is relative and must be defined by the individual. Talent, persona, and a strong management team impact an artist’s market value. However, some succeed without these factors, while others struggle despite having them.
What are you working on presently?
I am working on a couple of songs with Spellz. Two songs are ready, and we will share them soon. I’m excited because we created something very spiritual.
What do you do to relax?
I listen to music, watch movies, eat junk food, take showers, take walks, and play with my daughter.
What are some things people don’t know about you?
I love eating food I didn’t cook, enjoy being in nature, cherish life, and believe men should always love and protect the women around them.
