Controversial Nigerian singer Portable has reacted to an invitation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged naira abuse linked to his son’s naming ceremony.
The singer confirmed in a series of Instagram videos that he received a letter from the anti-graft agency, although the invitation had not been publicly announced by the commission.
According to him, the EFCC invited him to respond to questions concerning activities that took place during the naming ceremony held in May.
Portable, however, said he would not be honouring the invitation immediately. He explained that his lawyer advised him to delay any appearance until September, citing concerns over the current security situation in the country, including rising cases of insecurity and kidnappings.
He added that his legal representative would handle communication with the commission for now, insisting that he was not evading investigation.
The singer also maintained that he is not involved in fraud or money laundering and said he earned his wealth through music. He further claimed that he remains at home with his family and is not trying to run from the authorities.
Portable said the EFCC’s action was unnecessary and suggested that he was being singled out because of his popularity. He also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the matter, insisting that he is being unfairly targeted.
He warned that any attempt to unlawfully arrest him could trigger public reactions, while maintaining that he has no criminal involvement and should not be treated as a suspect.
