A heated debate comparing Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti with contemporary superstar Wizkid has intensified over the past fortnight, sparking responses across social media and the entertainment industry from fans, critics, and music veterans.
The discussion, which originated online, revolves around questions of influence, cultural significance, and whether Wizkid’s international achievements position him alongside Fela—whose revolutionary music and activism transformed African sound globally and defined an entire generation. Wizkid’s supporters point to his worldwide success as evidence of a new chapter in Nigerian music’s global recognition, while others insist that Fela’s political awareness and cultural impact remain incomparable.
As the conversation gained traction, numerous commentators and media outlets joined in, fueling curiosity about how veteran artists—especially those influenced by Fela’s legacy—would respond.
When Potpourri contacted veteran Nigerian rapper and singer Eedris Abdulkareem on Monday, January 26, 2026, for his perspective, he declined an interview but teased a musical response that could reshape the conversation.
“Thank you for reaching out on this. So sorry I am not granting any interview on the matter at the moment. I will let my song dropping in a few days do the talking. I really do appreciate you reaching out,” Abdulkareem stated.
Staying true to his word, Abdulkareem released “Fela Irumole” on Friday, January 30, 2026—a title that translates to “Fela The Deity”—offering his artistic perspective on the controversy. The track has triggered fresh discussion, with many interpreting it as the rapper’s uncompromising stance elevating Fela to god-like status while positioning other artists as “mere men.”
“It’s the truth and it is delivered truthfully,” reads a statement posted on the artist’s Instagram page announcing the song’s release.
