The conflict between Iran and the combined strategic interests of the United States and Israel didn’t emerge overnight. It is the product of decades of ideological clashes, military brinkmanship, and a contest for dominance over one of the world’s most volatile regions. Here are the five core drivers keeping this dangerous standoff alive.
1. Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Tehran’s steady advancement toward uranium enrichment beyond internationally agreed limits has alarmed both Washington and Jerusalem, who warn that a nuclear-armed Iran would permanently alter the balance of power in the Middle East and pose an existential threat to regional security.
2. Iran’s deliberate cultivation of armed proxy forces across the region. By financing and equipping groups such as Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in Gaza, and the Houthis in Yemen, Tehran has built a web of militant influence that consistently targets Israeli civilians and challenges American interests.
