The conflict between Iran and the combined strategic interests of the United States and Israel didn’t emerge overnight. It is the product of decades of ideological clashes, military brinkmanship, and a contest for dominance over one of the world’s most volatile regions. Here are the five core drivers keeping this dangerous standoff alive.
1. Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Tehran’s steady advancement toward uranium enrichment beyond internationally agreed limits has alarmed both Washington and Jerusalem, who warn that a nuclear-armed Iran would permanently alter the balance of power in the Middle East and pose an existential threat to regional security.
2. Iran’s deliberate cultivation of armed proxy forces across the region. By financing and equipping groups such as Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in Gaza, and the Houthis in Yemen, Tehran has built a web of militant influence that consistently targets Israeli civilians and challenges American interests. Washington labels this network state-sponsored terrorism.
3. Fundamental ideological rejection. Iran’s leadership has long refused to recognize Israel’s right to exist, with senior officials historically calling for its dismantlement. That position makes diplomatic normalization virtually impossible and gives Israel a standing argument for preemptive military action.
4. Geopolitical. Iran’s so-called “Axis of Resistance” stretches across Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Yemen — a calculated effort to project power and encircle Israel. Both the US and Israel view this expansion as a direct challenge to regional order and their own strategic footholds.
5. A relentless cycle of military escalation has repeatedly pushed the situation toward open war. From Israeli strikes on Iranian assets inside Syria, to Iran’s unprecedented direct missile and drone assault on Israeli territory in April 2024, to the US assassination of Revolutionary Guard commander Qasem Soleimani — each act of retaliation raises the stakes higher, leaving little room for de-escalation.
