Cape Verde’s historic debut at the FIFA World Cup took another impressive turn on Monday as they battled to a dramatic 2–2 draw against two-time champions Uruguay in a tightly contested Group H match in Miami.
Fresh from their surprising goalless draw against Spain in their opener, the tournament newcomers once again punched above their weight, taking the lead in the 21st minute. Kevin Pina produced a stunning long-range free-kick that slipped through the Uruguayan wall and left the goalkeeper stranded.
The early breakthrough lifted Cape Verde’s confidence, encouraging them to push forward, but their attacking intent also exposed spaces at the back. Uruguay quickly took advantage of the gaps, launching swift counterattacks to get back into the game.
The equaliser arrived when Maxi Araujo reacted quickest inside the box to head home after Sidny Lopes Cabral unintentionally diverted a dangerous ball toward his own goal.
Uruguay then completed a first-half comeback in stoppage time, as Agustin Canobbio calmly finished from close range after being picked out by Araujo, putting the South Americans 2–1 up at the break.
Cape Verde found it difficult to cope with Uruguay’s high pressing at times, as misplaced passes disrupted their rhythm. Still, they kept pushing forward and eventually found their reward midway through the second half.
An error from Uruguay’s defence proved costly when Mathias Olivera misjudged a pass across his own area. Helio Varela pounced on the mistake, rounded the goalkeeper, and finished into an empty net to restore parity at 2–2.
Uruguay thought they had grabbed a late winner when Federico Valverde forced the ball over the line, but the effort was ruled out for offside. Both sides pushed for a decisive goal in stoppage time, but the match ended level.
The result leaves Uruguay in second place and Cape Verde in third in Group H, with both teams on two points and still firmly in the race for qualification to the knockout stage.
