The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) has projected that the prices of food items such as rice, garri, yam and cassava could reduce by the next harvest season if governments improve security and cut production expenses for farmers.
Speaking in Lagos on Tuesday, the Deputy Chairman of AFAN in Lagos State, Mr. Shakin Agbayewa, said farmers would be able to increase cultivation and boost food supply if they had safer access to farmlands and cheaper farming inputs.
Agbayewa explained that the rising cost of fertiliser, fuel and farm operations has continued to push up food prices across the country.
According to him, expensive tractor services and insecurity in farming communities are major challenges affecting agricultural production and food affordability.
He noted that the high costs incurred during cultivation, transportation and farm security are eventually transferred to consumers in local markets.
The AFAN official urged both federal and state governments to provide farmers with subsidised fertilisers, affordable loans, improved rural roads and better irrigation facilities to support food production.
He also called for stronger cooperation between governments and farmers’ associations to create practical solutions tailored to the needs of different states.
Agbayewa expressed optimism that increased farming activities in the coming planting season would help ease pressure on food prices nationwide.
He added that Nigeria has enough arable land and manpower to achieve food sufficiency if the right agricultural policies and support systems are put in place.
According to him, empowering farmers remains one of the most effective ways to stabilise food prices and strengthen the nation’s economy.
