Engr. (Dr.) Jani Ibrahim, mni, OON, President of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), has led a delegation of over 200 Nigerian business leaders to the 138th Canton Fair in Guangzhou, marking one of the country’s largest trade missions to China in recent years.
The high-powered delegation comprises representatives from Nigeria’s chambers of commerce, manufacturing, agriculture, mining, and export sectors, reflecting the breadth of interest in strengthening bilateral trade relations between Africa’s most populous nation and the world’s second-largest economy.
Speaking on the significance of the participation, Engr. Ibrahim highlighted the Canton Fair’s status as one of the world’s premier trade exhibitions, attracting over 30,000 exhibitors and more than 300,000 buyers from around the globe.
“While NACCIMA members have attended the fair in previous years, this visit comes at a pivotal moment when Nigeria-China collaboration is reaching new heights,” Dr. Ibrahim stated. “Nigerian entrepreneurs are increasingly seeking direct connections with suppliers and manufacturers of machinery and equipment, and our presence here demonstrates NACCIMA’s unwavering support and solidarity with our business community.”
Beyond Buyer-Seller Relations
The NACCIMA President emphasized the need to transform the Nigeria-China economic relationship into something more substantive than traditional trade transactions.
“This is about partnership and collaboration, a true win-win relationship,” Dr. Ibrahim explained. “China, as the world’s most populous country, and Nigeria, one of Africa’s most populous nations, have much to learn from each other. Together, we can build a mutually beneficial, symbiotic relationship that goes beyond simple buying and selling.”
Strategic Timing and Opportunities
The 138th Canton Fair, China’s largest and longest-running trade exhibition, showcases diverse sectors including consumer goods, industrial products, and advanced manufacturing technologies. For Nigerian businesses, the event serves multiple purposes: a marketplace for sourcing products, a learning platform for industry best practices, and a launchpad for innovation and global trade partnerships.
The timing of this major delegation reflects Nigeria’s strategic push to diversify its supply chains, access advanced manufacturing technologies, and forge stronger economic ties with key global partners. With both nations possessing significant demographic advantages and growing markets, the potential for expanded cooperation spans multiple sectors including agriculture, mining, manufacturing, and technology transfer.
The delegation’s participation at the Canton Fair is expected to yield new business partnerships, technology collaborations, and investment opportunities that will contribute to Nigeria’s economic development objectives.
