The Ogu kingdom, located in the Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State, has once again captured widespread attention on social media with images from its annual Iria festival. This traditional ceremony symbolizes the transition of young virgins into womanhood.
According to a report by Apples Bite Magazine, the Iria festival is an age-old tradition of the Okrika people, organized by various towns, particularly during the months of December and January. Dating back to the 16th century, the festival has become a source of excitement for both locals and outsiders, drawing anticipation during the last three to four months of every year.
The Iria Festival is not only a natural form of entertainment but also a yearly competition for families in Okrika. Parents proudly present their virgin daughters, initiating them into womanhood and preparing them for the “fattening room.” In this room, the young women are nourished with body-strengthening meals, including pounded yam mixed with pounded plantain and fresh fish.
