The Nigeria Police Force has declared Andrew Wynne, a British national, wanted for allegedly attempting to overthrow President Bola Tinubu‘s government through the sponsorship of the #EndBadgovernance protests held from August 1st to 10th. Wynne, also known as Andrew Povich or Drew Povey, reportedly fled the country following the commencement of investigations.
Authorities accuse Wynne of orchestrating and financing violent protests, disseminating false information, and forming a network of sleeper cells to destabilize the government. He allegedly rented a space at Labour House in Abuja, established a bookshop and a school as covers for his activities, and mobilized funds to incite public unrest, anticipating international condemnation of the Nigerian government.
Alongside Wynne, one of his local coordinators, Lucky Ehis Obiyan, has also been declared wanted, and a global manhunt has been launched to apprehend them.
The police have already arrested nine suspects linked to the alleged plot and charged them with various offences, including conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, and cybercrime. Inspector-General of Police Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun has condemned the group’s activities, assuring the public that all necessary measures, including the use of INTERPOL, are being taken to locate and arrest the suspects at large. He emphasized the police’s commitment to protecting democratic rights while warning citizens against subversive elements exploiting protests for personal or ideological gains.
