Ex-Tottenham striker, Teddy Sheringham, has said that club chairman, Daniel Levy was wrong to sack Mauricio Pochettino many years ago.
Speaking during an interview with Casino Hawks, he revealed that he still doesn’t know why Pochettino was fired in the first place because he was clearly the right fit for the club.
According to him, Tottenham has stayed stagnant since the club lost to Liverpool in the UCL final, and Levy is to blame for missing the opportunity to push forward with the team under the Argentine manager.
“I still don’t know why they got rid of Mauricio Pochettino in the first place. I think he was the right fit for Tottenham.
I think back to the time when they played in the Champions League final against Liverpool and then after that there was no movement in the transfer market to really enhance the club,” he said.
Sheringham believes Spurs could’ve reached the next level by investing in the team that went all the way in the UEFA Champions League, but the hierarchy wrongly concluded Mauricio was the problem that needed fixing.
The Manchester United legend said that Sir Alex Ferguson always insisted that football clubs should strive to be better instead of standing still with their current players, and that was a good idea Levy failed to take.
“Sir Alex Ferguson always said if you stand still with the players you’ve got – you’re falling behind. So you always need to keep striving to be better. That wasn’t the case with Tottenham at that particular moment. They just didn’t look to go further.
Whether that was Pochettino’s idea of not wanting to buy anyone or Daniel Levy’s that he didn’t want to spend any money on new players, who knows? But it’s definitely a time when you need to enhance the squad, when you’re doing well,” he added.
Despite leading Tottenham to the semi-finals of the Europa League with an unexpected win against Eintracht Frankfurt, Postecoglou is still very much aware that his job is not safe.
Reports have said Spurs’ hierarchy is already planning for life after the Australian if the club fails to secure UCL qualification this season.
