The wife of Edo State governor, Betsy Obaseki, has responded to Senator Adams Oshiomhole’s recent jabs regarding her childlessness, reported by Apples Bite Magazine. Oshiomhole, in a controversial statement, trolled Governor Godwin Obaseki and his wife by claiming that they had refused to adopt any children because they do not love them.
“I was shocked yesterday to see Mrs. Obaseki, the first lady, saying that our candidate has no wife. She is the most, I’m sorry that she has to say that, because here is a woman who has no child. Between him and Obaseki, they have no child, they are childless,” Oshiomhole said.
He added, “They are even not ready to adopt… But people who have love for children, they go to motherless homes and adopt children. They have not adopted, they are both in their 60s. So you married, I don’t know whether it’s a contract or whatever it is, but they have no child.”
In response, Mrs. Obaseki, addressing over 200 Edo women in the diaspora virtually on Saturday, encouraged childless women to view themselves as fruitful, full of potential, and proud mothers of children who would arrive in God’s time. The meeting was co-hosted by Ifeyinwa Ighodalo, wife of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo.
Sharing her own painful experiences, she said, “My words of comfort to you, like myself, who have conceived and experienced miscarriages, painful stillbirths, and evacuations of babies, who died in our wombs and as a result, have no children to show for the pain we have endured. You are not barren. I dare to call you fruitful. You and I are potential and proud mothers of children that will come in God’s time. Enjoy the life God has given you.”
Obaseki further emphasized that motherhood goes beyond the biological aspect, highlighting her impact on society and encouraging other women to find fulfillment in their contributions.
“Being fruitful is not limited to childbearing. It is about impacting lives and creating positive change in society. There is no point in feeling bad. Women can fulfill God’s purpose in many ways beyond motherhood,” she added.
