The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has conducted a technical assessment of the Eba oil well in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area, marking a significant step toward making Ogun State an oil-producing region.
The site visit follows presidential authorization from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for commercial exploration and represents the Federal Government’s commitment to establishing the necessary technical infrastructure for oil production. The inspection team comprised officials from NNPCL, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), and national security agencies, who evaluated the location’s preparedness for drilling operations.
Hussein Aliyu, Project Coordinator for Enserv, led the NNPCL technical delegation, which included Wasiu Adeniyi, Onwugba Kelechi, Engr. Rabiu M. Audu, Ojonoka Braimah, Ahmad Usman, Akinbosola Oluwaseyi, Salisu Nuhu, James Amezhinim, Yusuf Abdul-Azeez, Amararu Isukul, and Livinus J. Kigbu.
Governor Dapo Abiodun characterized the initiative as transformative for Ogun State, projecting that oil production at Eba would drive economic expansion, generate jobs, and strengthen federal engagement with coastal communities in the state.
Earlier geological assessments confirmed hydrocarbon deposits in the Ogun Waterside area, prompting preliminary surveys and technical evaluations by NNPCL. The state government independently verified the well’s coordinates, confirming the discovery falls within Ogun State territory.
Security arrangements for the project include naval personnel who have been stationed at the site for more than 18 months with backing from the state government to safeguard the facility and surrounding area.
The Eba oil well represents Nigeria’s broader strategy to diversify oil production beyond the Niger Delta. Industry observers indicate that upcoming phases will address regulatory requirements, community engagement, environmental safeguards, and operational launch procedures.
Governor Abiodun commended President Tinubu for supporting frontier oil basin development and promoting balanced distribution of Nigeria’s energy assets.
