Former Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, has officially defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and declared his intention to contest for the Delta Central Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Omo-Agege said his decision followed extensive consultations with political allies, supporters and stakeholders across Delta State and beyond.

The former lawmaker explained that after weeks of reflection and engagement with various political actors, he became convinced that the NDC offers a stronger platform to advance the interests of Delta Central, Delta State and Nigeria as a whole.

Omo-Agege also appreciated the leadership of the NDC for welcoming him into the party. He specifically acknowledged the roles played by the party’s founder and leader, Seriake Dickson, National Chairman Moses Cleopas, presidential aspirant Peter Obi, and party chieftain Rabiu Kwankwaso for reaching out to him during the transition process.

According to him, the NDC is built on the principles of inclusion, accountability, grassroots participation and true federalism, adding that these values align with his political vision and commitment to public service.

The former Deputy Senate President confirmed that he would contest the Delta Central Senatorial seat under the platform of the NDC in the 2027 elections, stressing that the decision was driven by calls from his constituents who want him back in the National Assembly.

He noted that his ambition was not about personal gain but about continuing the mandate given to him by the people in 2019 and responding to renewed demands for effective representation.

Omo-Agege expressed concern over the state of development in Delta despite its enormous natural and economic resources. He lamented that the state’s vast oil and gas wealth, fertile agricultural land, vibrant business community and youthful population have not translated into better living conditions for residents.

He criticized what he described as poor leadership and mismanagement of public resources, stating that many communities still suffer from bad roads, inadequate healthcare facilities, poor educational infrastructure and widespread unemployment.

According to him, it is unacceptable that while huge financial resources are available to the state, many communities remain abandoned and basic social services continue to deteriorate.

The former senator vowed that if elected, he would not return to the Senate merely to occupy a seat, but to actively fight for fair allocation of federal projects and resources to Delta Central.

He also pledged to promote accountability in the management of public funds released to Delta State and support policies aimed at job creation, business growth, agricultural development, improved healthcare delivery and better access to quality education.

Omo-Agege further called on youths, women, traditional rulers, elders and all eligible voters in Delta State to participate actively in the 2027 electoral process.

He described the Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) as the most powerful tool available to the people, insisting that it remains stronger than money, intimidation or political propaganda.

He added that the NDC would also present candidates for the governorship and other elective positions in Delta State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
