Interim coach of the Super Eagles, Austin Eguavoen, has dismissed rumours that he resigned following the two AFCON 2025 qualifying matches against the Republic of Benin and Rwanda.
Eguavoen, who is also the technical director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), was appointed interim coach after negotiations with German coach Bruno Labbadia fell through. Labbadia was initially expected to take over permanently following the resignation of Finidi George.
Under Eguavoen’s leadership, the Super Eagles secured four points from a possible six, with a 3-0 victory over the Benin Republic in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, and a goalless draw in Rwanda on Tuesday.
Speaking to journalists upon his arrival at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Wednesday, Eguavoen clarified that reports of his resignation were false.
“It’s unfortunate that people are spreading incorrect information. At a time like this, we don’t need negative stories,” Eguavoen stated.
He explained that he had only mentioned his intention to sit down with the NFF hierarchy after the two games to discuss plans for future matches.
“But when I saw that story, I was worried. What people are reading isn’t correct. I’m still very much in charge. As the technical director of the NFF, I have the responsibility of handling the Super Eagles at this moment,” he confirmed.
