US President Donald Trump has announced plans to launch a new “Gold Card” visa program designed to attract affluent foreign nationals to the United States. Set to debut in two weeks, the initiative aims to provide a pathway to permanent residency for what Trump described as “very high-level people.”
The program would replace the existing EB-5 immigrant investor visa and could cost applicants up to $5 million, with Trump suggesting that revenue generated could help reduce the national deficit.
“It’s going to be a route to citizenship, and wealthy people will come into our country by buying this card. They’ll be wealthy, and they’ll be successful, and they’ll be spending a lot of money and paying a lot of taxes,” Trump stated during a press briefing on Tuesday.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, who referred to the initiative as the “Trump Gold Card,” criticized the current EB-5 program as being “full of nonsense, make-believe and fraud.” Lutnick emphasized that all Gold Card applicants would undergo thorough vetting procedures.
