Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti will posthumously receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammy Awards, becoming the first African musician to earn this distinction nearly three decades after his passing, the BBC reports.
The recognition of Fela, widely credited as the creator of Afrobeat, reflects the growing international prominence of African music following the global rise of Afrobeats and the Recording Academy’s launch of the Best African Performance category in 2024.
His son, Afrobeat artist Seun Kuti, celebrated the honor: “Fela has been in the hearts of the people for such a long time. Now the Grammys have acknowledged it, and it’s a double victory. It’s bringing balance to a Fela story.”
Rikki Stein, Fela’s longtime friend and former manager, called the award “better late than never,” acknowledging Africa’s historical underrepresentation in major music award ceremonies.
Family members, friends, and collaborators will attend the Grammy ceremony to accept the award and honor the legacy of an artist who merged music with political activism and cultural pride.
Fela’s influence extended far beyond his innovative sound. He was an outspoken opponent of corruption, social inequality, and military dictatorship in Nigeria, wielding his music as a tool of resistance—a position that repeatedly brought him into conflict with the country’s authoritarian regimes.
His confrontation with power intensified in 1977 following the release of his album Zombie. In retaliation, soldiers stormed and destroyed his Lagos compound, Kalakuta Republic, during which his mother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, suffered fatal injuries.
Undeterred, Fela responded with characteristic defiance, delivering his mother’s coffin to government headquarters and releasing Coffin for Head of State, channeling personal tragedy into powerful political statement.
