Manchester United legend, Paul Scholes, has warned Matheus Cunha to reconsider joining the club this summer.
MUFC have been linked with a summer move for the Brazilian forward who has scored 15 goals in 29 Premier League games this season, and he has a release clause worth £62.5 million ($84m) in his contract.
Having his say via his TNT Sports column, Scholes said that even if Cunha appears to have all of the attributes Ruben Amorim wants in a forward, Manchester United just feels like a bad place for any footballer to join right now.
Scholes believes Amorim is chasing the Wolves striker because of his physicality, eye for goal, and athletic nature, but the player himself must think about his decision carefully because joining MUFC is more of a worry than a privilege nowadays.
“He looks like he’s got the attributes that Ruben Amorim wants. He knows that physically, his team are just not strong or quick enough, so Matheus Cunha is obviously athletic, and he’s got quality with 15 league goals this season. I just worry for any signing coming to Manchester United at the minute. It just feels like it’s such a bad place to go,” he wrote.
Amid reports that Chelsea and Arsenal also want the Brazilian’s signature, Paul revealed that Manchester United also needs to be be certain if Cunha is actually a centre-forward or a wide player, else, they’ll end up with another new signing that doesn’t fit.
The legendary midfielder believes Manchester United can sign the top 3 best players in football right now, and he’ll still not be confident that they’ll be able to turn the fortunes of the club around next season under Ruben Amorim.
Scholes, however, added that he’ll understand the club backing the manager if he identifies a preferred target ahead of the summer transfer window because the rebuild will have to start from somewhere.
“The quality of play right now is so poor. And with Cunha, is he a centre-forward or is he a wide player? There’s no doubt that he has quality and of course, it would be nice to sign him, but I worry about where he fits in. You can sign the best three players in the world, and I think they’ll struggle coming into this team at the minute, but they’ve got to start somewhere,” he added.
