ONE-PARTY STATE: "We will Lead You to the Promised Land" -Tinubu Assures Nigerians

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has pushed back against rising concerns that the wave of high-profile defections into the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) may be steering Nigeria toward a one-party system, saying the defections are a reflection of the people’s democratic choices and aspirations.

Speaking at the APC National Summit at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, Tinubu addressed critics of the growing dominance of the APC, which has recently welcomed a string of prominent defectors from opposition parties.

“Before I speak, I just need to tell those saying one party system is not good. It’s one party ruling and driving the aspirations of Nigerians. Where do they stand? You don’t blame a people bailing out of a sinking ship when there’s no life jacket,” the President began, with a hint of defiance.

Tinubu’s comments come amid mounting apprehension in opposition circles that the political landscape may be tilting dangerously toward single-party dominance.

Several opposition leaders have expressed fears that the defections, if left unchecked, could erode Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.

But Tinubu countered that such fears overlook the constitutional freedoms that allow individuals to realign politically.

“I’m glad about what we have and I’m expecting more to come. That is the game. We’re in a constitutional democracy. Don’t forget the freedom of movement and the freedom of association are not criminally punishable. Welcome to the progressives. Sweep them clean,” he said.

The President spoke shortly after receiving a groundswell of endorsements from the National Assembly and all major organs of the party, including the APC National Working Committee (NWC) led by the National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, and the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) led by Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State.

In a unanimous show of support, all three bodies formally adopted Tinubu as the party’s sole candidate for the 2027 presidential election.

Reacting to the endorsement, Tinubu was grateful and assertive: “The endorsement today, the ‘carry go’ expression—I know road.

“We will lead you on to that promised land,” he declared, drawing cheers from the crowd.

He also offered reassurances on the economic trajectory of the country, stating that the administration’s efforts to revamp Nigeria’s economy are yielding results.

“The resuscitation of the Nigerian economy is on course. The hope is standing before you—take it on. You are the leaders and the conscience of this country. Nigeria will be industrialized. The next two years will be great. We have the mission, we have the vision”, he said.

In a nod to party faithful and supporters, some of whom may feel left out of political appointments thus far, the President urged patience and trust.

“To many of you I have not offered political positions, be patient, many things are coming,” he said, signaling a broader inclusion strategy as his administration advances.
